J. Richard Finlay Advisories works with stakeholder capitalists, thought leaders and social entrepreneurs in the private and public sectors in harnessing the waves of innovation and opportunity that are too rarely captured —while avoiding the minefields of disaster and disruption that are ubiquitous. A reputation for prescience has become his professional signature.

From the unfolding of stakeholder capitalism in the 1980s (a term coined by J. Richard Finlay) and the backlash against unresponsive boardroom and governance practices in the 1990s, to the dangers of Wall Street’s risk-excessive culture, the rise of Turbo Populism (another term he coined) on Main Street and the appearance of the political disruptor in the 21st century, Richard has predicted the seismic trends that have defined the future.

Citing the consequences of directors who did not direct and other boardroom breakdowns, Richard’s public predictions about the demise of Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Countrywide Financial, Hollinger, Livent and others reads like a chronicle of disaster foretold. He was the first to warn about the coming public bailout binge long before the U.S. government’s trillion-dollar TARP was announced, and predicted that Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase would pay staggering costs for their ethical shortcomings and boardroom misjudgments leading to the subprime mortgage crisis.

In an award-winning piece that preceded the Reagan revolution by several years, Richard wrote in the 1970s about “the waning of public confidence in government’s ability to solve problems, and its growing rejection of the high costs when it tries.” It was a theme that defined more than a decade of political momentum in the United States, and presaged a similar trend for other countries. Succinctly identifying, and giving voice in a uniquely eloquent fashion to, the critical inflection points of society and its key institutions has been one of the defining hallmarks and signature features of J. Richard Finlay Advisories.
